What is a Wisdom Tooth?

Third molars, or wisdom teeth, are the final teeth to develop in the dentition. They generally emerge between the ages of 17 and 21. Many factors affect wisdom teeth and not everyone will have the same experiences – some people will have four wisdom teeth, and some will have none.

Why Do We Have Wisdom Teeth?

According to many anthropologists, wisdom teeth developed as an answer to our ancestors’ diets; these comprised mostly of roots, nuts, and foliage. These food types require more chewing power, and so we grew more teeth!

In modern times, cutlery such as knives and forks have made eating easier – and thus made wisdom teeth redundant. Evolutionary biologists now classify them as ‘vestigial organs’, or functionless body parts.

Wisdom Teeth Can Cause Problems

The most common problems wisdom teeth can cause is when they become ‘fully impacted’ under the gum or they may only erupt halfway – a ‘partial eruption’. They can often erupt at different angles due to the lack of room for them in your jaw. This can make cleaning difficult, cause pain, infection, crowding, cysts, or damage to nearby teeth. Removal is often the only solution.

Wisdom teeth can also cause:

  • pericoronitis (inflammation of the gums overlying the partially erupted wisdom tooth)
  • resorption (or dissolving) of the tooth in front of the wisdom tooth
  • dental decay
  • jaw pain

Why You Should Have Your Wisdom Teeth Removed

The removal of your wisdom teeth depends entirely on how and where they have emerged, whether they are pushing against your other teeth, and whether they are causing pain or other health problems.

It is best to have your wisdom teeth assessed by a dentist so that they can assess whether your wisdom teeth need to be removed. To determine the exact placement of your wisdom teeth, a thorough examination is carried out, often comprising of a combination of X-rays.

The removal of wisdom teeth is usually a simple routine procedure. This can be performed under local anaesthetic with inhalation or oral sedation; we can also carry out the procedure under general anaesthetic if we decide this is necessary.

If you do not have your wisdom teeth removed, they should still be monitored closely. There may be a risk of developing complications and problems later.

Other reasons to have your wisdom teeth removed:

  • infection or abscesses
  • prior to or after orthodontic treatment (braces)
  • preparation for orthognathic (corrective jaw) surgery
  • when the tooth is involved in cysts or other pathology
  • in some cases of jaw fracture
